Brenden Aaronson was an unused substitute as the USA suffered a bruising defeat to Belgium, a night that also carried a Leeds United relegation subplot. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the midfielder was overlooked despite making the squad.

Named on the bench by USA boss Mauricio Pochettino at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Saturday night, Aaronson watched his side go 1-0 up in the 39th minute when former Leeds midfielder Weston McKennie scored from an Antonee Robinson corner.

Belgium levelled before the interval through Zeno Debast, then took control after the break by scoring four more, before Patrick Agyemang struck a late consolation.

Pochettino used eight substitutes, seven of them after half-time, yet Aaronson stayed on the bench.

Capped 56 times, the American has been one of Daniel Farke’s most used players this season, with 24 league starts and six outings from the bench for nearly 2,000 minutes of Premier League action.

Pochettino continues to be linked with the job at United’s key relegation rivals Tottenham, who are one point above the relegation zone under Igor Tudor.
