Brentford have turned down a £40 million offer from Newcastle United for striker Yoane Wissa, according to The Athletic.

The DR Congo international is a major target for Newcastle as they seek to bring in striker reinforcements after the departure of Callum Wilson and the uncertain future of Alexander Isak.

Wissa is keen to join Newcastle and has been frustrated by Brentford’s tough negotiations after reportedly claiming the club promised to allow his transfer last summer.

He recently removed all references to Brentford from his social media profiles and was absent from Brentford’s squad for their recent Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest.

However, Brentford are holding firm in their ‘not-for-sale’ stance and claim they have not quoted an asking price to Newcastle.

Newcastle are expected to continue their pursuit of Wissa, although they could be forced to turn to other targets with the summer transfer window increasingly nearing its end.

The Magpies have endured a highly disappointing summer, having missed out on multiple targets and dealing with Isak.

Despite their numerous struggles off the pitch, Newcastle made a decent start to their league campaign with a goalless stalemate at Aston Villa on Saturday.

Eddie Howe’s side are next in action on Monday when they welcome Liverpool to St James Park for a heavyweight meeting to conclude the second round of Premier League matches.
