Brian Madjo has been cleared to play for Aston Villa, eight months after his €12m January move from Metz. The club said on Tuesday that its appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport over the 17-year-old’s registration had been upheld.
The Anglo-Luxembourgish striker had been unable to feature because of FIFA rules on international transfers of minors, under Article 19. He is an England U17 international with 9 caps and 4 goals.
Born in London on 12 January 2009 before growing up in Luxembourg, he joined a club in a country that left the European Union in 2020, ending the EU exemption for employing underage players.
He had initially been barred from playing for the Villans until 2027. He will now be registered as an Aston Villa player and allowed to take part in official competitions next season. The Europa League winners are managed by Unai Emery.
Emery included Madjo throughout pre-season with the first team. Physically ready and in good form, he scored four goals in friendlies, including a brace against Walsall.
