Danny Welbeck struck twice as Brighton beat the reigning champions 2-1, his display dominating fan-sourced player ratings and intensifying scrutiny of his England omission.

According to WeAreBrighton.com, Thomas Tuchel named 35 players for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan yet left Welbeck out, a call that looked like madness by Saturday.

Brighton led when Ferdi Kadioglu’s cross was nodded back by Diego Gomez for Welbeck to finish. Milos Kerkez levelled after Lewis Dunk’s attempted back-header went wrong. Welbeck then decided it, Jack Hinshelwood meeting a Yankuba Minteh cross before the striker converted, the goal standing after a VAR check.

Welbeck topped the marks with 8.86. Jan Paul van Hecke earned 8.50 for two big box interventions, Minteh 8.43 as a relentless outlet, and Kadioglu 8.21. Bart Verbruggen received 7.71 after denying Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo.

James Milner’s 7.86 reflected an influential midfield shift, while Mats Wieffer’s 7.71 included a necessary booking and assured work on Gakpo. Pascal Gross posted 6.57, Gomez 7.00 and Hinshelwood 6.79.

Dunk was marked at 5.86 following the error before Kerkez scored. Further Brighton efforts were kept out by Giorgi Mamardashvili, including strikes from Kadioglu, Minteh and Gomez.

The ratings were compiled from supporters’ votes on social media after the match.
