Brighton and Hove have become the latest UK city to announce their hopes of staging a match at the 2035 Women’s World Cup.
Councillors in Brighton and Hove have agreed to apply to become a host city of the 2035 Women’s World Cup.
England is set to host the tournament in a decade, alongside Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. A final decision is due in April, but the UK joint bid is the only valid bid that has been received by FIFA.
If Brighton’s bid to host games is successful, the Amex Stadium would likely stage matches in the group stage of the tournament.
Council leader Bella Sankey said: “As a host city, we’ve already seen the amazing impact that elite women’s sports can have.
“These events promote the best of Brighton and Hove to people across the world and see us welcome thousands of people to our wonderful city.
“They have also inspired more local women and girls than ever before to get active – and I see that in my own household.”
Earlier this year, Brighton and Hove was one of the venues for the Women’s Rugby World Cup Finals.
Brighton have joined 12 other cities that have announced their hopes of hosting matches at the 2035 Women’s World Cup.
The likes of London, Manchester, Glasgow and Cardiff are among those most likely to stage games in 10 years.
Manchester United’s planned new 100,000-seater stadium could rival Wembley Stadium as a potential host for the final.
Leeds and Newcastle recently announced their plans to stage matches, joining Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool and Nottingham in England.
Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney plan to bring the tournament to Wrexham at a redeveloped Racecourse Ground.
Stadiums at the 2035 Women’s World Cup are likely to need a minimum capacity of 20,000 – something which Northern Ireland does not have.
The capacity of Windsor Park in Belfast will likely need to be increased from its current capacity of 18,500.
FIFA will announce the hosts of the 2035 Women’s World Cup on April 30th, 2026, and Brighton will hope they are chosen as one of the venues to stage matches.
The hosts of the 2031 tournament will also be officially confirmed. The tournament that year has received only one bid from the USA, Mexico, Jamaica and Costa Rica.
