Eiran Cashin has not quite worked at Brighton, but he could still offer plenty to a Championship side
Eiran Cashin’s move to Brighton & Hove Albion has not worked, producing just two first-team appearances in a year.
A report from The Telegraph has now revealed that the Seagulls were “warned-off” signing Cashin in the first place, but went ahead based on strong data reports.
The same article states the Premier League outfit spent £10m on the centre-back as part of a £245m splurge over the summer of 2024 and the winter window of 2025.
Two Championship loan spells later, it stands to reason that Brighton may look to cut their losses on Cashin. Here are two sides who should be ready to pounce…

It’s the obvious move. Derby County are the club Cashin came through with, has played the most games for, and is where he impressed Brighton to the tune of £10m in the first place.
His move to Brighton will have been a disorientating one, with their reputation for developing players and finding gems likely leading to him believing he could be the next big name in the Premier League.
It hasn’t quite happened that way, and so a substantial period of readjustment may be required, which is likely why we saw his struggles on loan with Birmingham City.
He will find no greater understanding than back where it all started at Derby, who know exactly what he’s capable of and so will give him all the time he needs to get back there.
It could be a shrewd move for the Rams, who would, in all likelihood, be able to buy Cashin back for a lower sum than they sold him for less than a year ago due to the struggles he’s had and Brighton wanting to get him off the books.
Derby would then have an incredible young talent back at their disposal, and a bit of profit in their back pocket, too.
There may be some work to do on that transfer fee to ensure it fits into Derby’s budget, but wages should be no issue, with Capology estimating that Brighton put Cashin on £15k per week last season, which easily fits into the Rams’ wage structure, with plenty of £20k-per-week stars estimated to be on their books.

Blackburn Rovers, where Cashin is currently on loan, are likely to be in the conversation along with Derby, with the Irish youth international having been dropped into the squad and quickly becoming an important member.
Rovers are, however, in a relegation battle, and will not be able to afford the 24-year-old if they are to go down.
If Derby aren’t interested, that could create a huge opportunity for a club like Charlton Athletic.
The Addicks aren’t clear of the dropzone themselves just yet, but they look in a much better position to stay in the division after their promotion from League One last year.
That summer transition window saw them bring some of the best League One talent along with them in the likes of Charlie Kelman, Rob Apter, Tanto Olaofe and Harvey Knibbs.
While that strategy hasn’t completely failed them, it’s notable that they moved to add greater experience to the squad in Lyndon Dykes and Conor Coady during the winter.
The latter of that duo is only on loan from Wrexham, and his £25,000-per-week wages, as estimated by Capology, make him the highest earner at the club and is unlikely to be a commitment they’d want to make long term for a 32-year-old.
Cashin, therefore, would be a much better option. Still young for a centre-back, is a better fit for their wage structure and would arrive with significant Championship experience for his age.
It would also be an attractive proposition for Cashin, a chance to move to London and play for what appears to be an upwardly mobile, exciting side.
Coady has become an important player in the short time he’s been with Charlton, so he will need replacing in the summer, and Cashin fits the bill perfectly.
