Brighton & Hove Albion have completed the signing of Michael Svoboda from Venezia as part of their summer defensive rebuild.

On 19 June, The Athletic reported that Brighton were interested in the 27-year-old and ready to meet the €5 million (£4.3m) release clause in his contract.

His arrival follows the additions of centre-back Pascal Struijk from Leeds United and right-back Costinha from Olympiacos. The south-coast club have also agreed to sign Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham Hotspur in a move worth up to £50m.

Those moves come after the £52m sale of Jan Paul van Hecke to Tottenham Hotspur, Adam Webster’s summer release and Igor Julio’s likely exit.

Svoboda captained Venezia last season, making 30 appearances as they finished first in Serie B and earned promotion to the Italian top flight. He has spent six years with the club, including two Serie A seasons that ended in relegation, having joined from WSG Tirol in the Austrian Bundesliga.

He has played 138 times for Venezia and earned a new contract thereafter. Capped four times by Austria, he was named in Ralf Rangnick’s 26-man squad for this summer’s World Cup and has been an unused substitute in each of their three group games.
