Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has once again been at the centre of the club’s rise this season. The Portuguese maestro has taken over the mantle of creator-in-chief for the Red Devils ever since arriving at Old Trafford from Sporting in January 2020.

Fernandes has been in the form of his life in recent times, finishing the campaign with nine goals and 22 assists. The 31 year old also set a new record for the most assists in a Premier League campaign after setting up 21 goals in the league.

Fernandes’ efforts were key to United’s third-place finish and subsequent qualification for next season’s Champions League. The player has swept the individual awards as a result, winning the FWA Footballer of the Year and the Premier League Player of the Season.

The Portuguese has picked up his record-breaking fifth Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award and was also voted as United Players’ Player of the Year. However, the uncertainty surrounding his future has kept fans on their toes.

Most important piece of United’s puzzle

Fernandes will enter the final year of his contract this summer and is yet to sign a new deal. The Portuguese Magnifico was heavily linked with an exit from the Theatre of Dreams last summer but ended up staying.

It turned out to be a key factor in United’s rise this season, especially under Michael Carrick, who reinstated him in his favoured No. 10 position. With the Englishman appointed permanent manager last week, the Red Devils are looking foward to the future with optimism.

The English giants are expected to further invest in the squad over the summer to hand Carrick all the tools to succeed. Yet one cannot help but feel that Fernandes remains the most important piece of the puzzle at the moment.

United initiate talks for Fernandes’ renewal

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said that United have already initiated the process to keep Fernandes at the Theatre of Dreams. He said: “What I can tell you is that, according to my information, behind the scenes, movements have already started for Bruno Fernandes to stay at Manchester United.”

“This summer, with Man Utd, from what I understand, prepared to make efforts to keep Bruno. So, contacts are ongoing. Manchester United want to continue with Bruno Fernandes.”

“Man Utd want to avoid temptations around Europe, temptations from Saudi, where they wanted Bruno, three, two and one year ago, so, always obsessed with Bruno Fernandes, but my understanding is that Man Utd have started the conversations behind the scenes to keep Bruno Fernandes, and to make sure Bruno Fernandes is going to continue at the club.”

“It’s a desire of the ownership, it’s a desire of the management, it’s a desire of the coach, it’s the desire of the technical staff, it’s the desire of the team-mates – they are all very happy with Bruno as one of the leaders of this dressing room.
