Bruno Guimaraes: Man United must take huge chance

Manchester United have made significant progress this season as they sit third in the league with eight matches to go. The Red Devils signed well in attack last summer with the additions of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.

With the departure of Casemiro and the probability of playing European football next season, it is imperative that United bolster their midfield quality and depth. Moreover, the likely departure of Manuel Ugarte means even more will need to be invested in the midfield.

As a result, the Red Devils have been consistently linked to talented midfielders such as Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and even Sandro Tonali. Most recent reports have suggested that United are taking a keen interest in Newcastle United captain, Bruno Guimarães.

It has been suggested that the player would be open to a move as Newcastle will likely secure Conference League football at best. What’s more, there have been reports from Brazil that United could seal a deal for around €80m (£69m).

This would be a no-brainer, season-defining move for the club and one they must do everything in their power to complete.

Ready-made for Premier League

The Red Devils made a point of securing Premier League-proven talent last season through Cunha and Mbeumo, and they have seen the rewards of this.

Not that either player has been in top form all season, but Mbeumo hit the ground running and has come up clutch against most of the top clubs this season. Cunha’s form has improved massively since Christmas and he has been an integral member of Michael Carrick’s team.

Consequently, United have been linked to numerous English-based players and none are more proven than the Brazilian. Guimarães has been the star signing of the Newcastle project and has been the catalyst for everything they have done well since their Saudi takeover.

He has been a driving force in the midfield and led them to their first cup success in decades. Before getting injured this season, the 28-year-old had scored nine goals and provided seven assists from a deep midfield role.

Of course, no transfer is risk-free, but it would almost be guaranteed that he would get off to a flying start at Old Trafford.

Send a message to rivals

Last summer was important not just for the injection of quality in attack, but it reminded the league that a 15th-placed United, with no European football on offer, could still attract some of the country’s best talent.

Therefore, were the club to prise away the best player from a rival, it would once again reiterate the club’s unique pulling power. In 2012, the Red Devils stole away Robin van Persie from Arsenal to score the goals to fire the club to a Premier League title.

Perhaps the signing of Guimarães could ignite a title challenge by United, as he would go a long way to solving the current midfield issues.

Player quality

Of course, none of this would matter if he were not an incredible player, which he is.

In his own words, “I’m not the strongest, I’m not the fastest, I’m not the most skilled, but I think I think better than most people out there.” This has been the mantra for the Brazil international as he has routinely dominated Premier League midfields.

He is a complete midfielder, who can play in numerous roles across the park. If he were to replace Casemiro, he is well used to playing as a defensive screen in front of the back four.

Nonetheless, he offers so much more than this. His passing range and ball control are also impressive and could help Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo in a midfield three.

Should United also sign another number six to replace Manuel Ugarte, the Newcastle captain can also play in a more box-to-box role. His statistics this season also show he is adding goals and assists to his game, another massive string to his bow in replacing the outbound Casemiro.

He has been described as a “specialist holding midfielder out of possession, scurrying around looking to break up play as a sitting midfielder in a three-man unit.” Although, once his side is in possession he “transforms into an attacking box-to-box player who offers drive, creativity, goals and assists.”

Leadership and fight

Finally, United have often struggled to respond when the chips are down over recent years, but they seem to be improving in this regard.

There is no doubt losing Casemiro will hurt this element, but Bruno Guimaraes is a wonderful boost of leadership, courage and fight.

A midfield partnership of Bruno Fernandes and the Brazilian would not only be a creative dynamo, but their infectious work rate and leadership would make United’s midfield one of the most balanced in Europe.

Final thoughts

No transfer is a guarantee of success, but if United genuinely have a sniff of landing this “exceptional” player, they must do everything in their power to achieve it.
