Bruno Henrique marked his first start under Leonardo Jardim by starring in Flamengo's 2-0 win over Cusco in their Libertadores opener. The forward had not begun a match since 15 February, against Botafogo, after a month and a half out with pubalgia.
According to Globo.com, the No 27 is viewed by Jardim as a key figure as he looks to build rhythm on his return. After the match in Cusco, Bruno Henrique acknowledged the conditions and stressed his commitment to the team.
He said the altitude, at 3,350 metres above sea level, was felt, yet that he and the group would give everything to secure three points. He added the entire squad deserved praise for a very difficult game and that the victory was a first step in their campaign.
Bruno Henrique now has 72 Libertadores appearances, 62 for Flamengo, with 24 goals overall, 21 in red and black, and 17 assists.
He was among several changes as Jardim selected a much-changed side from the weekend Brasileirão win over Santos. Emerson Royal, Danilo, De la Cruz, Paquetá and Plata were also given opportunities.
He explained the plan was to run smart, go long, avoid their end-to-end game, stay organised and break, which they used to their advantage.
Flamengo host Independiente Medellín at the Maracanã on Thursday at 21:30 Brasília time in the Libertadores. Before that, they face Fluminense at home in the Brasileirão on Saturday.
