The Magpies kick off another European adventure at St. James' Park with the visit of the Spanish giants (kick-off 8pm BST) for a fixture laden in history, evoking memories of Tino Asprilla's famous hat-trick in 1997 and the great Sir Bobby Robson who managed both clubs with distinction.

This will be Guimarães' second taste of the continent's top competition since his move to Tyneside in 2022, and he made no secret of both his and the club's ambition after making the move from French side Lyon.

And having skippered United to Carabao Cup victory last term - the club's first domestic trophy in 70 years - the 27-year-old feels European glory in the years to come is not beyond the realms of possibility for a Newcastle side who are still on an upward curve under the stewardship of Eddie Howe.

"In the future, it's going to be something that we're looking for," said Guimarães. "But at the moment we don't want to put limits on our dreams - we just want to play game by game and see what we've got.

"But we're very excited, and hope we can go as far as possible."

He added: "I always look forward and I always look to make history with this club. It's nice to be in the Champions League two times in the last three (seasons) - that's unbelievable for us, so we have to keep going."

The LaLiga champions arrive at St. James' having won a double last season and are unbeaten in the league so far in 2025/26.

Guimarães revealed the decorated Barca side of his youth had an influence on him growing up - especially their Brazilian star of the mid-2000s.

"I'm very excited. I've never faced Barcelona before," he said. "Some of their teams I watched when I was younger and the player that made me feel in love with football was Ronaldinho, so I always watched Barcelona play.

"And after, Iniesta, Xavi, Messi - and (it's) nice to see another Brazilian shine there again in Rafinha. I think we're very excited, and I can't wait for tomorrow and to play the game."

One of the features of Howe's front-footed Magpies team is their engine room, which is usually occupied by Guimarães, Joelinton and Italian schemer Sandro Tonali.

The former AC Milan man has been a revelation at the base of United's midfield triumvirate, and his teammate now wants the trio to "prove" themselves at Europe's top table.

"(Tonali is) very good - very, very good. I'm enjoying a lot to play (by) his side. I think we complete each other, I think he's enjoying playing (by)my side as well," said Guimarães. "We have a very good connection with each other as well and I think we have one of the best midfields in the Premier League, to be honest.

"Now, we have to prove it in the Champions League as well. I think the midfield does almost everything - attack, defend, have to save the ball on the line, score as well! As a team, we have everything going through the midfield, and it's nice to share the pitch with good players."
