Burgos have lodged a formal complaint with the RFEF’s Competition Committee, accusing Valencia CF of the improper use of Umar Sadiq in their Copa del Rey last-16 tie, according to Ser Deportivos Valencia.

On the pitch Valencia won 0-2, with the Nigerian forward scoring the second and final goal.

Burgos argue Sadiq had already featured in this edition for Real Sociedad, which they believe breaches eligibility rules. Their submission, signed by club president Alejandro Ariel Grandinetti, cites FIFA article 5.5, stating a player cannot play official matches for more than two clubs in the same season within the same national league or cup.

Valencia have rejected the claim in a filing to the Single Competition Judge. The club says Sadiq’s registration complied with regulations and that both LaLiga and the RFEF authorised his participation. They also argue there is no regulatory distinction between league and cup for player selection.

The dispute comes before Monday’s quarter-final draw, and a decision is expected before then.

Even so, indications are that Burgos’ complaint is unlikely to prosper, after local fans pushed the issue on social media on Thursday night. A day earlier, Javi Galán, who had played in the Cup for Atlético Madrid, also appeared for Osasuna against Real Sociedad at Anoeta.
