The BVB women made a highly promising start to the match against their visitors from Italy. The Dortmund ladies had their first big chance in the eighth minute when Sara Ito played a precise long ball from her own half into the path of Annika Enderle, who had stolen a march on the Juve defence. But it was goalkeeper Danielle De Jong who came out on top in the subsequent one-on-one battle, making a strong stop to keep out the Dortmund player's effort.
In the 24th minute, the visitors then exploited a moment of uncertainty in the Dortmund defence: Abigail Brighton fired Juventus in front after the Black & Yellows had proven unable to clear the ball from their own penalty area. Ten minutes later, however, Borussia had a chance to equalise: after a foul on Annika Enderle, the referee pointed to the spot. However, the Juventus goalkeeper was able to save Rita Schumacher's shot – as well as Dana Marquardt's follow-up. Juve then doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time. Amalie Vangsgaard made it 2-0 and put the visitors in a comfortable position for the second half. The Borussia ladies thus found themselves behind at the interval, despite a respectable performance.
After the restart, the action increasingly took place in the Black & Yellow half of the pitch. The visitors upped the pressure and placed the home team's defence under permanent strain. The Borussia Dortmund coaching staff reacted by making a double substitution in the 54th minute: Emilia Pauls and Nora Willeke came on in place of Rita Schumacher and Dana Marquardt in order to bring fresh impetus into the game. But only three minutes later, things became dangerous: a free-kick from the away team sailed narrowly over the bar after the ball had taken a decisive deflection off Jenske Steenwijk, who was standing in the wall.
The score increased to 3-0 in the 59th minute, Emma Godø heading the ball into the net following a precise high cross. Shortly thereafter, in the 62nd minute, Juventus replaced nearly their entire team and introduced 10 new players to the fray. The Black & Yellows also reacted, bringing off Ronja Leubner and introducing Noreen Günnewig in the 64th minute.
Another mass substitution followed for Dortmund in the 69th minute: Nova Wicke, Hedda Wahle, Mia Böger, Marah Tayeh, Mia Scholle and Lucy Wisniewski came onto the pitch to provide fresh impetus. However, the visitors remained dominant and increased the scoreline to 4-0 in the 76th minute. Paulina Krumbiegel scored with a powerful shot from the edge of the box, rounding off what had been a one-sided second half. Despite the defeat, the Black & Yellows showed fighting spirit at times but were unable to hold their own against the strong visitors.
For the BVB women, this was the final friendly match before their first competitive game. On Tuesday 19 August, Dortmund will play host to Borussia Mönchengladbach in the DFB-Pokal playoffs. Kick-off at Stadion Rote Erde is at 19:00 CEST. Tickets are still available via the Online Ticket Shop.
