The Confederation of African Football CAF will announce the 2025 African Player of the Year winner on Wednesday with Mohamed Salah, Achraf Hakimi and Victor Osimhen vying for the continent’s most prestigious individual honour.

The winner will join an elite list of African icons who have shaped the award since its creation in 1992.

Eto’o & Toure remain unmatched

The African Player of the Year award has been dominated over the years by two giant:

  • Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon) — 4 title
  • Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast) — 4 title

They remain the only players in history to win the award four time.

The two time champions

Six player have lifted the trophy twice:

If Salah wins on Wednesday, he will stand alone in second place all time with three CAF Player of the Year award trailing only Eto’o & Toure.

What Hakimi win would mean

A victory for Achraf Hakimi would make the Paris Saint Germain full back:

Only the second Moroccan in history to win the CAF award (after Mustapha Hadji in 1998)

Before CAF created the modern award, Morocco had already produced three winners of the France Football African Ballon d’Or (a separate award that existed from 1970 to 1994):

  • Ahmed Faras (1975)
  • Mohamed Timoumi (1985)
  • Badou Zaki (1986)

Osimhen’s bid

A win for Victor Osimhen would give Nigeria back to back CAF Player of the Year titles after Ademola Lookman claimed the award last year.
