Callum McGregor talks PFA POTY nominations and Glasgow Derby

Sky Sports Scotland caught up with Celtic’s Callum McGregor this afternoon to talk about the PFA Scotland Player of the Year awards and even spoke a bit about the last Glasgow Derby of the campaign this Sunday…

The Hoops skipper has been nominated himself to be on the shortlist for the award this year, after leading his side to a potential domestic Treble.

A brilliant season from the Celtic captain

Calmac has been in great form this term again, making the team tick and ensuring everyone is on the ball with their dedication and commitment to the cause too. It’s been a really successful period by all accounts, as we have improved steadily in European football once again, in tandem with keeping our foot to the floor domestically – where nobody can really touch us at the moment.

“Obviously it’s a nice feeling”

The midfield maestro spoke to Luke Shanley for a bit earlier today, and confessed it’s nice to be involved in these sorts of events as it shows he’s doing all the right things. “Obviously it’s a nice feeling,” he said in relation to his nomination. “It’s voted for by the players, so it kind of shows you that your doing a lot right and the players recognise that as well. So it’s always a nice award to be up for.”

“It’s always nice to be in the conversation”

“It’s always nice to be in the conversation. People recognise that you’ve had a good season and you’ve done well. For me, it always goes back to the collective. If the collective are doing well, then the individuals will show up well within that as well. And with this year, that being the case, obviously we’ve got three from the team being up. So it shows you that we’re doing a lot right collectively. Like you say, it’s always nice to be in the conversation when these things come around as well.”

Assessing his own season to date, he responded: “Yeah, obviously I think just looking at the number goals. People tend to look at that from the outside and if your scoring a lot of goals in the position I’m playing, especially at the base of midfield. The guys are really fluid in there. We ask a lot of the midfield players to be involved in the game in an attacking sense again.

“So it’s always nice to chip in with goals. I think we’ve obviously won two trophies and we’ve got one to play for. And if your in that type of bracket and your doing well, then I think just naturally you’ll be involved in these kind of conversions again.”

“I voted for Simon Murray. He’s been outstanding. Obviously, we can’t vote for ourselves. If we could, I’d have voted for one of our guys”

When asked who he himself voted for this time around, McGregor said: “I voted for Simon Murray. He’s been outstanding. Obviously, we can’t vote for ourselves. If we could, I’d have voted for one of our guys. But Simon’s been amazing. He’s scored so many goals, he’s been a big player. And when he’s played against us, he’s given us a real difficult time. He got my vote.”

The Bhoys have found their form again just as Ibrox is on the horizon and the captain acknowledged the incredible response Rodgers has gotten from the side. “Since the manager had a pop at the players a couple of weeks ago, the response has been amazing”, he said.

“Sunday is the next game that’s available for that”

“He sees these things coming, so he’s had a little poke and the players have reacted well. We’ve got four really important league games to go. We spoke about it going into the Dundee United game that every game’s important, we want to finish strong and get maximum wins. Sunday is the next game that’s available for that.

“When you lose any derby, you want to win the next one. That was the same going into the game at Celtic Park. It never quite worked out that way, a bit of circumstance at the end of the game and they carry a bit of luck. We have to try and put it right. It’s a difficult away game but we’ve got a bit of momentum, we’re in good form – we want to put it right and win this one,” he added.
