West Londoners saw a penalty claim waved away in cup final defeat

Calum McFarlane believes Chelsea should have had a penalty in their FA Cup final defeat by Manchester City.

The Blues were beaten 1-0 by Pep Guardiola’s men on Saturday, as Antoine Semenyo struck with a sweet backheel in the 72nd minute from Erling Haaland’s cutback.

However, McFarlane, the Chelsea caretaker manager, deemed his side worthy of a spot-kick after Jorrel Hato went down under challenge from Abdukodir Khusanov in the City box.

The Dutchman, fielded on the left of the Blues’ back three, was the furthest Chelsea player forward as he broke away down the left-hand side.

He was chased down by Khusanov, who made a clumsy challenge tight to the touchline as Hato hit the deck.

Referee Darren England waved away the shouts from Hato, McFarlane, and the rest of the Chelsea players and staff, and VAR also dismissed the clamours for a penalty.

Replays showed Hato placed his leg between Khusanov’s just before he fell, but the incident was adjudged to have not been a clear and obvious error that would have seen Chelsea awarded a spot-kick.

Post-match, McFarlane rued the Blues’ lack of fortune in recent weeks.

“It’s a penalty,” McFarlane told TNT Sports.

“Jorrel gets in front. It’s a collision, and he comes [through] the back of Jorrel. It’s very similar to Joao Pedro at Liverpool, I thought that was a penalty as well against [Jeremie] Frimpong.

“We don’t seem to be getting the luck at the moment.

“[I got] no explanation [from the officials]. [There is] not much point [in going and asking].”

Chelsea’s attentions turn back to the Premier League, where they have their work cut out in trying to secure European qualification.

They have two games remaining - the first at home against relegation-threatened Tottenham - and the second a trip to Sunderland on the final day.

The Blues are sat ninth in the table, currently two points off eighth-placed Brentford, who occupy the Europa Conference League place, and four adrift of Brighton in seventh, who have one of two Europa League places after City’s FA Cup place went to the league, with Guardiola’s men assured of a Champions League spot.
