Juventus women are already chasing Roma at the top of Serie A, but a win against Fiorentina over the weekend kept them on pace with the league leaders.
The Old Lady endured a difficult start to the season but they have got back on track in recent weeks.
Juventus looked like they were about to drop points against Fiorentina on Sunday, but a stoppage time winner saved their blushes right at the death.
Estela Carbonell netted her first goal for Juve in front of the home fans with her goal coming at the perfect time.
“I’m very happy with my first goal for Juventus and with the win.” Carbonell said after the game. “I’m really enjoying myself here with the team, the city, I feel at home. I’m happy. We played well, we had lots of chances to score and we had the energy to believe in ourselves right to the end and find the winning goal.”
The win for last year’s league champions keep them in the title race in this year’s longer campaign.
The Serie A expanded this season to 12 teams from the traditional 10 that usually compete in the Italian top flight.
Juventus have won four of their last five games and are the most in-form team in the league right now.
Roma are still top of Serie A despite Juve’s impressive run. The gap between the top two in the table is five points as we approach the midway point of the season.
Although there is a two game gap between the league’s title contenders the season is far from over and Juventus will be confident they can catch up to their rivals.
Both Juventus and Roma have dominated Serie A in the past with eight titles between them in the last eight years.
It is The Old Lady who holds the best record in the competition though, with six league wins trumping Roma’s two.
Juventus face their league rivals away from home in their first game back after the international break. Three points on the road would close the gap down to two points behind Roma and could be the turning point for their season.
