Cyle Larin could feature as Canada opens their World Cup campaign against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Southampton striker has mounted an impressive comeback story since January, amassing his most goals (11) in a single season in five years.

Yet, a very different conversation surrounds the 31-year-old. While Southampton fans have watched a revitalised striker, many Canadian supporters are still waiting to see that same version of him.

The contrast raises an intriguing question. Why has a player who has thrived at club level struggled to replicate that form for Canada, and how could the World Cup finally provide the stage for Larin to translate his resurgence in form onto the international stage?

From Loanee to Permanent Signing

Arriving at the EFL Championship in January, loanee Cyle Larin had an immediate impact; a debut substitute appearance was met with his first Saints goal in under three minutes.

He had scored just one goal during his previous loan spell at Feyenoord.

What followed was arguably the most productive spell of Larin’s career in recent years. The Canadian averaged 0.84 league goals per 90, providing a clinical edge in the final third.

Beyond his goalscoring, Larin’s physical presence added a new dimension to their attack. His ability to hold up play, bring teammates into the game, and provide a necessary on-pitch arrogance gave Southampton a genuine target-man option – something they lacked without Scotsman Ross Stewart.

The ability to rotate strikers, without losing a physical presence at the forefront, was crucial. It was a role that suited the Canadian perfectly, helping him rediscover confidence and contributing to Southampton’s 22-game unbeaten run in the Championship. Excluding a 2-1 loss against Manchester City, Larin remained unbeaten when he played.

Speaking on Southampton manager Tonda Eckert’s impact, he said, “He gave me that trust to be able to go on the field and, first of all, know I’m going to play games, score goals, and just help the team: build up, hold the ball, and all these things that I knew I could do.”

That renewed belief and consistent output led to his permanent signing for a reported €3m.

Struggles For Canada

Cyle Larin last scored for Canada against Panama in October 2024.

Since 2023, he’s scored just two goals for the international side, highlighting it as a long-term struggle, rather than a temporary issue. But his resurgence at club level directly led to his inclusion in the World Cup squad.

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch was impressed two months into his loan on the South Coast, praising the 31-year-old: “Cyle Larin’s move to Southampton is exactly what he needed. He’s playing outstanding. He’s made a huge impact on that team. He’s going to come into camp in top form, which is exactly what we need. I couldn’t be more excited about Cyle right now.”

Larin’s fitness was a targeted improvement by Tonda Eckert. He had accumulated just over 300 minutes in his prior loan spell at Feyenoord. During his time at St Mary’s, Larin operated as a consistent pressing threat. He’s averaged over 2.5 offensive duels won per 90, while in the 78th percentile for total offensive duels amongst Championship strikers this season.

According to journalist Matthew Scianitti, Marsch met with Larin on this specific matter, discussing how he needed to show his off-ball significance.

Recent performances for Canada have looked like a shadow of his level at Southampton.

Larin plays in a striker pairing with Juventus forward and Canada’s all-time goalscorer Jonathan David. Yet, it’s a similar system to Southampton’s. While Canada adopts a higher-pressing system under Marsch, the pressing structure is similar with two forwards leading. At Southampton, Larin presses with Irish midfielder Finn Azaz alongside him.

However, Finn Azaz floats in a 10 role behind Larin in possession, while Jonathan David will drop deeper on the opposite side of him. This aims to utilise David’s creativity, as he ranks among the highest Serie A strikers for playmaking metrics. As the top scorer, David’s effect further up the pitch is being hindered, with Larin growing more isolated. Larin operates as the main outlet for Southampton with players in and around him, playing to his strengths (hold-up play, attacking the box).

Canada is trying to balance both David and Larin, potentially limiting both in the process. Over the course of the last ten games, they’ve averaged just over 1xG and one big chance created per 90 — matching these stats with only 11 goals in that time.

The challenge is ensuring the right environment for him to flourish on the biggest stage. Whether that’s structural changes or an increased emphasis on belief in the 31-year-old.

Larin arrives at this year’s World Cup amidst his best club form in years. With his future permanently tied down at St Mary’s, he’s able to remain fully focused on the task at hand for Canada.
