Flamengo’s attempt to reduce Jorge Carrascal’s suspension failed on Thursday, so the Colombian will miss Sunday’s derby with Vasco at the Maracanã. He has one match left to serve of a four-game punishment. The clássico is scheduled for four pm Brasília time in the Campeonato Brasileiro.
According to Globo.com, the club appealed a two-game ban handed down after his red card against Fluminense on 12 April, which, combined with a sanction from the Corinthians match, made it four in total. The case was heard by the STJD’s Pleno on Thursday morning.
The setback leaves Flamengo light in creative areas for the Vasco meeting. Paquetá is still recovering from a left thigh oedema, while Arrascaeta sustained a fractured clavicle in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw at Estudiantes in Argentina and will require surgery.
Head coach Leonardo Jardim’s options for the role include Saúl, De la Cruz, Luiz Araújo and Plata. Saúl and De la Cruz are midfielders by trade but have been used as a second volante at Flamengo.
Luiz Araújo and Plata have both operated centrally during Filipe Luís’s spell at the club, with the Ecuadorian also doing so for his national team. They present alternative solutions for the derby.
