Michael Carrick has confirmed Lisandro Martinez is back in training and could return for Manchester United against Leeds United on Monday. The £56.7 million defender has missed the last five games with a calf problem.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Martinez took part in an open session during United’s training camp in Dublin on Tuesday, putting him in contention for the Old Trafford meeting.

United have had no FA Cup commitments and are now into their third week without a competitive match, with the Dublin camp aimed at keeping the squad sharp.

Carrick said the pause has helped players edge back towards fitness, though Harry Maguire will serve a one-match ban on Monday after his red card at Bournemouth before the break.

Leeds travel for what appears the toughest of their remaining seven Premier League fixtures. Daniel Farke’s side have not won a league game for two months.

They will, however, be buoyed by Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final victory on penalties at West Ham as they look to halt that run.
