Michael Carrick has said he is focused on the now at Manchester United and not the prospect of a permanent role at Old Trafford.

Carrick began his reign as interim manager with a 2-0 derby win over Manchester City last weekend. The win lifted the atmosphere at Old Trafford after the exit of Ruben Amorim, in arguably the club’s best performance of the campaign.

The performance has already seen Carrick touted with the permanent position, ahead of this weekend’s trip to face Premier League leaders Arsenal.

However, the 44-year-old has said his focus is only on the short-term. Asked about his future, Carrick said: “For the week or so it’s been so far it hasn’t happened just yet, the initial thoughts are what’s happening now.

“The important thing for me is any decision I make or the staff make is it’s not short-term, I’ve got a responsibility to whatever happens next I’ve got to make the right decision. As time goes on we’ll work our way through it.”

Carrick added that he’s looking forward to the challenge of facing Arsenal. The North Londoners lead the Premier League table by seven points and are flying in the Champions League, with seven straight wins.

“Looking forward to the game, it’s a big challenge,” he added.

“They’re a very good team. They have so many strong points to their game, they are where they are for a reason, we’re fully aware of that.

“We’re in a good place and looking forward to the game. It’s where we want to be, with that energy and enthusiasm to go and be positive.”
