Michael Carrick hailed the “huge steps” super sub Benjamin Sesko has taken of late after scoring again off the bench in Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Everton.
Sesko has scored three goals in his last four games off the bench for United, his latest coming when he curled home from Bryan Mbeumo’s pass to give his side a fifth win in six games.
Responding to the calls for Sesko to get more of an opportunity from the start given his form, United boss Carrick responded: “I get why everyone is talking about it and making a bigger deal out of it but I’ve got a really good relationship with Ben.
“We’ve had some really good conversations and he’s in a really good place.
“Part of it is helping him take steps and developing, growing him as a player. Sometimes that’s little steps, sometimes that’s bigger steps. He’s taken some huge steps recently in terms of the goals he’s scored and the impact. The confidence and the belief that he’s playing with now is great to see. We’ve obviously got to manage that as well.
“We’ve got some good forwards so it’s one of those decisions we have to try and get right but he hasn’t got an issue. He obviously wants to play but I can’t speak highly enough of how he’s been and the work he’s putting in.
“His attitude to come on and do what he’s done again, I thought he finished with so much confidence and belief. A ruthless finish which kind of sums up where he’s at at the minute which is great to see.”
Carrick was also full of praise for goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who had to deal with plenty of pressure from Everton throughout.
“I thought Senne was outstanding tonight,” he said. “You couldn’t hope for much more.
“Safe hands, calm, composed, came to punch when he needed to and calmed things down. I thought it was an exemplary kind of performance and I was delighted for him.”
