Fans across Castelló gathered to watch Spain’s 2026 World Cup debut, then left with mixed feelings after a 0-0 draw with Cabo Verde in Atlanta.
At 18.00 on Monday, supporters met in spots around the city to share the occasion, according to El Periódico Mediterráneo. The opener at Mercedes Benz Stadium pitted Spain against World Cup debutants Cabo Verde, ranked 67th by FIFA.
Many expressed frustration, describing the performance as flat and saying the result felt like a win for Cabo Verde but a disappointment for Spain.
Others urged patience. Héctor Molina argued it was only the first step, with time and plenty of matches still to come in the tournament.
Comparisons with the South Africa generation dominated. Some fans felt today’s level is far from 2010, with Fernando Carrero namechecking favourites like Iniesta, Xavi, Puyol, Ramos and Casillas.
Another strand of opinion clung to optimism born of Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, pointing to a younger squad that includes Lamine Yamal.
Kick-off times and daily routines also weighed on viewers, who noted the schedule is not ideal and games can drag. Veteran supporters still approach this World Cup with enthusiasm, hoping Spain could win it again.
