Edinson Cavani, 39, is back on the market after confirming his Boca Juniors exit, and attention has swiftly turned to his next step. According to Superdeporte, Danubio have signalled he would be welcomed home.

The Uruguayan striker terminated his deal last week on being told he was not in new coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s plans. His farewell message thanked Boca fans and admitted injuries had stopped him reaching the level he wanted.

Despite retirement talk, voices in Uruguay still hope to see him play. Danubio sporting director Gustavo Matosas issued a pointed invitation, saying the club would always open its doors to him and that breakfast would be ready with the rest of the players.

For now there are no negotiations, and those close to Cavani maintain his priority is to regain fitness before deciding whether to continue or retire.

A persistent lumbar issue, including a hernia and back pain, limited his availability at Boca and affected his influence, contributing to an early departure despite months left on his contract. The injury is considered delicate, requiring time and a gradual recovery.

At Valencia he showed flashes in a single season after arriving in summer 2022, scoring five goals in a difficult campaign, then left for Boca to pursue a long-held ambition. With the window open and his future unresolved, interest is likely to follow.
