Celtic fans were left worried when Kasper Schmeichel suffered an injury while away on international duty with Denmark and then went on to play the remainder of the game against Portugal despite being in visible pain. The fear was that the issue might put him out for the foreseeable future and to some extent, that has proven to be the case.
Schmeichel was not available at the weekend when Celtic faced Hearts. Instead, Viljami Sinisalo took his place between the posts and kept a clean sheet on his Premiership debut. He did not have much work to do but did what was asked of him on the day.
Of course, most Celtic fans would want to see Schmeichel return to the starting XI as soon as possible. He brings a lot to the table, not just in terms of his quality but his experience and leadership as well.
We finally have some clarity on how long Schmeichel could be out due to the injury he suffered against Portugal. We won't be seeing him back in action anytime soon. As reported by the Daily Record, Brendan Rodgers said:
"We’ve had some news and we will see over the course of the next five to six weeks is what was mentioned. But this is just something that I think day by day we have a look at it.“I think the timeline that was given to us was maybe around that but Kasp tends to think it might not be as long as that. But certainly in the immediate future he won’t be available."
There is still some hope though that Schmeichel could be back available before the end of the season. Rodgers said when asked about the matter:
"Yeah I believe so, but like I say we will just need to keep an eye on him."
Celtic fans wanting Schmeichel back is not a reflection of Sinisalo's performance against Hearts. In fact, he did quite well and by the looks of things, he will get the next few weeks to show what he is truly capable of between the posts.
If Sinisalo does well enough, there is a possibility that he could make the first-team gloves his own. At the end of the day, it is worth remembering that Schmeichel is 38 years of age and not a long-term solution. Perhaps Celtic have had his successor under their noses all along.
Sinisalo was highly regarded during his time at Aston Villa. Now, let's see what he can be as a starter for Celtic over the coming weeks.
