Celtic have reportedly written to UEFA to demand answers over the disallowed strike from Kelechi Iheanacho during Thursday’s Europa League meeting at Celtic Park. Brendan Rodgers’ side thought that they had drawn things level.
German referee Tobias Stieler allowed the Nigerian striker to wheel away in celebration before signalling that there had been a handball in the run up to the goal. There was a lengthy delay as VAR checked, leading to further confusion in the stadium, before Christian Dingert okayed the decision.
Replays indicated that the ball had not touched Iheanacho’s hand and instead had been controlled by his head.
Now, as reported by The Sun, Celtic have asked the European governing body for an explanation as to why the referee was not told to check the screens himself.
The explanation that has been supplied so far in media circles is that the VAR team could not find anything ‘clear and obvious’ to overturn the mistake. However, it is widely being condemned as one of the worst VAR mistakes.
Celtic will be looking to banish their goalscoring troubles with the weekend clash against Motherwell. The Scottish Champions need to find their groove and the manager needs to get a tune out of his players soon if they are to enjoy a successful season.
