One of the greatest players ever to wear the Hoops has revealed he is currently undergoing cancer treatment – and Celtic have been quick to make clear that the entire club stands with him.

Kenny Dalglish, 75, one of the defining figures in Celtic’s history and among the finest footballers these islands have ever produced, has confirmed he is receiving treatment for cancer. The disclosure came after Dalglish accidentally published a social media post containing the news, prompting him to speak publicly and confirm the diagnosis rather than leave it unaddressed. He stressed that the treatment is going well, thanked the medical staff caring for him – calling them “a credit to themselves” – and asked that his family’s privacy be respected.

Celtic responded swiftly, posting their heartfelt support for Dalglish via the club’s official channels. The message was unambiguous: this is a man who belongs to this club’s story, and the Celtic family stands behind him. It is the kind of response you would expect from a club that understands what Dalglish means – not just to those who watched him play, but to the identity of Celtic itself. The club’s bond with its greatest former players does not fade, as anyone who has followed how Celtic has handled difficult news involving alumni will already know.

Dalglish joined Celtic as a teenager and went on to score 167 goals in 320 appearances for the club, winning four Scottish league titles before his £440,000 move to Liverpool in 1977 – a British record fee at the time. He went on to make 515 appearances for Liverpool, winning the First Division title eight times and the European Cup three times, before managing the club to further glory. He also earned 102 caps for Scotland, scoring 30 international goals. The numbers are extraordinary; the impression he left on those who watched him is something else entirely.

The announcement drew immediate support from across football. Liverpool stated that the club’s “support, best wishes and love” were with Dalglish and his family, while Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United – two other clubs he served with distinction – also sent their messages publicly. Alan Shearer was among the individuals to respond, reflecting the breadth of affection Dalglish commands. Just as other Celtic legends have spoken of the lasting pull of this club, the outpouring made clear that Dalglish’s connections run deep across the entire game.

He has asked for privacy, and that wish deserves to be honoured. What matters right now is that he knows the warmth directed toward him is genuine – from Celtic, from Liverpool, and from everyone who has ever been moved by watching him play.

We’re with you, Kenny. Get well soon.
