The Championship play-offs have been overshadowed by spying allegations surrounding Middlesbrough’s tie with Southampton, with the Saints charged by the EFL before a goalless first leg at the Riverside.
According to talkSPORT, a number of Championship clubs are studying CCTV to check whether they were spied on by Southampton during the campaign. Meanwhile, the Guardian has reported that Middlesbrough have been contacted by several clubs with suspicions, and others have expressed surprise at how quickly Southampton adapted to unexpected team shapes and set-piece routines during a 19-game unbeaten run.
It is not known whether West Brom are among those clubs.
The first leg saw home fans arrive with binoculars and direct chants at the visitors, while Saints head coach Tonda Eckert faced repeated questions before and after the game about the incident and ended his post-match press conference early.
Boro boss Kim Helberg said every Championship club should be angry, arguing that viewing an opponent’s pre-match session brings a massive advantage. He added that without spying Southampton would not have known Boro’s first-half shape, which had not been used before, and he lamented the unfairness and loss of respect.
The sides meet again on Tuesday evening for the second leg.
