CHAN 2024: Uganda thrashes Guinea and gets back on track
Uganda delivered a commanding 3-0 victory over Guinea this Friday, August 8, 2025, at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Kampala, during the second matchday of Group C at CHAN 2024. Mpande, Okello, and Ahimbisibwe all found the net for the Cranes, putting themselves right back in contention.
Reagan Mpande broke the deadlock in the 31st minute, seizing on a poorly cleared ball in the Guinean box. That goal gave the Cranes the lead at the break, following a tightly contested opening half hour.
In the second half, Uganda ramped up the pressure. In the 60th minute, a rash Guinean tackle resulted in a penalty, confirmed after a VAR review. Allan Okello coolly converted from the spot in the 62nd minute. Ivan Ahimbisibwe then put the result beyond doubt in the 89th, pouncing on a rebound left by the goalkeeper.
Syli National, who defeated Niger on matchday one, couldn't replicate that performance. Despite enjoying more possession in the second half, Guinea lacked sharpness in the final third. A penalty they were awarded in the 68th minute was overturned after a VAR check.
With this win, Uganda now has three points, drawing level with Guinea. Algeria remains top of the group with four points, while South Africa sits at the bottom with one. Syli National’s next fixture is against Bafana Bafana on August 11, while Uganda will take on Niger.
