Charlton 1-2 Bristol City: Hodgson wins first game in charge | OneFootball

Roy Hodgson’s Bristol City picked up a 2-1 win at The Valley yesterday afternoon, their first victory since February’s win over Blackburn Rovers.

Scott Twine opened the scoring for The Robins, before Charlton’s Lyndon Dykes levelled before half-time. The winning goal came through Swedish defender Noah Eile, who bundled in his first goal in English football since joining Bristol City in January.

The away side flew out of the traps, with Emil Riis striking the post from close range inside the opening minutes following a through ball from Neto Borges. However, Robins fans didn’t have to wait long for their goal, with Twine burying the ball into the far corner from inside the penalty area with just 11 minutes on the clock.

Max Bird almost doubled the visitors’ advantage on the half hour mark, forcing Charlton keeper Will Mannion into a save with his long distance effort. Moments later, Dykes equalised for The Addicks when he latched on to Charlie Kelman’s ball into the box and tucked past Radek Vítek between the Bristol City posts. Twine was shown a yellow card in the aftermath of the goal for dissent, having disagreed with the referee’s decision that the ball had gone out of play for a Charlton throw-in.

In the final moments of the first-half, Ross McCrorie went down with what appeared to be a knee injury and was subsequently withdrawn at the break for Sam Morsy. Twine won a free kick on the edge of the Charlton penalty area in the 55th minute, and whilst his direct effort was saved by the keeper, it was spilled straight to Eile who poked the ball over the line to restore his side’s advantage.

Charlton looked to level the scores once again through Sonny Carey, but the midfielder couldn’t find the target from the right side of the six yard box. At the other end of the pitch, Riis came close to extending Bristol City’s lead, but Mannion denied him with a strong save.

Kayne Ramsey received the hosts’ first yellow card of the day with an hour played, when he fouled Riis inside the Charlton half. A double change followed for The Addicks, which saw Luke Chambers and Kelman replaced by Tyreece Campbell and Ibrahim Fullah. Charlton winger Harry Clarke also saw yellow roughly five minutes later following a foul on Bird.

The home side continued to push for an equaliser, but Vítek stood tall between the posts and denied Fullah with 15 minutes left to play. Charlton then made two more changes, with Conor Coventry and Clarke withdrawn in favour of Matt Godden and Joe Rankin-Costello. Godden forced Vítek into a save almost instantly, with a right footed shot from inside the box.

Bristol City’s second change came in the 83rd minute when West Ham United loanee George Earthy was introduced, replacing Bird in the middle of the park. The Robins’ final change saw Sinclair Armstrong replace Riis, whilst Charlton replaced Greg Docherty with Jayden Fevrier.

Campbell and Dykes both came close to equalisers for their side, however neither man could find the target before Rankin-Costello forced Vítek into yet another stop. Armstrong looked certain to net City’s third of the afternoon in the closing stages when he broke from a Charlton corner, however his shot was fired straight into the arms of Mannion. The final play of the game saw Robins wing-back Mark Sykes pick up his second yellow card of the season.
