Charlton Athletic have signed Allan Campbell on loan from Luton Town, and he will be looking to prove his last temporary club wrong with performances

Luton Town midfielder Allan Campbell has completed a loan move to Charlton Athletic, following an underwhelming temporary spell at South London rivals Millwall last season.

The Addicks have completed a deal to sign the Scotsman on a season-long deal from Luton Town, re-uniting the midfielder with manager Nathan Jones, who signed him for the Hatters back in 2021, leaving Scottish side Motherwell behind to link up with the Welshman and test himself in the Championship.

Campbell received his first call-up to the Scotland squad while he was playing under Jones at Luton, and made his international debut against Armenia in June 2022.

He will hope that he can recapture his form under the management of Jones at Charlton, having not been included in Luton's matchday squad for any of their games so far this season prior to being sent on loan.

Campbell spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan in the Championship with Millwall following Luton's promotion to the Premier League, but he did not have the impact he would have hoped for during his time at The Den.

He made eight appearances in a row for the Lions after signing for the club on deadline day at the end of the summer transfer window last year, before making just four more appearances for the remainder of the season - partly because he sustained a couple of injuries but also because there were players ahead of him in the pecking order.

The combative box-to-box midfielder did provide two assists in the 12 games he played for Millwall, but he would have wanted to have a far bigger impact on the team when he first signed for the club.

Charlton signed centre-back Alex Mitchell from Millwall for an undisclosed fee earlier in the transfer window, and he has played a key role in the Addicks' defence which has yet to concede a goal in League One this season, so they will hope Campbell proves to be another successful signing who has recently played for their rivals.

Following his underwhelming loan spell at Millwall last season, re-uniting with Jones at Charlton could be exactly what Campbell needs to regain his confidence and get back to his best on the pitch, and he will be looking to prove the club wrong, having mainly failed to get a look in under Joe Edwards during his brief time in charge of the Lions.

Allan Campbell could be a good signing for Charlton Athletic

Charlton needed another option in the middle of the pitch, with it seeming as though Terry Taylor and Scott Fraser are not part of Jones' plans for this season, and Campbell looks like he could prove to be a good addition.

Campbell knows how Jones plays, so he should be able to gel with the team more quickly than you might usually expect from a new signing.

He has never played below Championship level in English football, and only ever played in the top flight in Scotland, so his ability could shine through in the third tier.

The 26-year-old played 43 times in the Championship, including an appearance in the play-off semi-final, as Luton won promotion to the Premier League at the end of the 2022/23 season, and he will hope that he can be part of another successful team in SE7.

Campbell could turn out to be a good option for Charlton under Jones, and if his performances help the Addicks win promotion back to the second tier, he will have done something to prove the Millwall supporters who criticised him wrong.
