Conor Coady joined Charlton Athletic on loan from Wrexham, but it remains to be seen where he will be playing his football next season.

Charlton Athletic took a huge step towards survival with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Birmingham City last time out.

It was a big moment for Nathan Jones’ side, and whilst they still have work to do, they had a nine-point cushion over 22nd-placed Leicester City going into the midweek fixtures.

A productive January window has undoubtedly helped the Addicks, although one of their signings, Conor Coady, was only used as a late substitute against Blues.

Charlton urged to avoid permanent move for Conor Coady despite impressive start

The 33-year-old looked like a sensible addition for Jones when he joined on loan from Wrexham, as Coady brought experience and know-how to the Charlton team.

And, the early signs have been positive, as Coady has helped make Charlton difficult to beat, even if Jones’ decision to use him in midfield came as a surprise given he has spent the best part of the past ten years as a defender.

But, Coady has played his part in midfield, and, with the player seemingly out of favour at Wrexham, there is already talk about whether he will extend his stay at Charlton.

However, when asked by FLW about the prospect of signing Coady on a permanent deal, Charlton fan pundit Chris Woodward explained why he thinks it’s something the club shouldn’t pursue, even if he was full of praise for the impact the ex-Wolves man has made.

I don’t think Coady will, or should, be playing for Charlton in the Championship beyond this season.

He has been very good since he came in, offering leadership, experience and some encouraging performances, but if we want to push forward, he is not the sort of player we should be looking at.

He is the type of player you want when you’re struggling or scrapping for survival, but that’s about it.

I’m shocked Coady has been utilised as a midfielder, but he has brought a calmness on the ball that our other midfielders don’t possess, although you can tell he is on the older side, as he hasn’t got a great deal of energy or speed to get around the pitch, which Jones tends to prefer in this system.

I think his wages would make a deal impossible anyway, but I’d prefer to go for someone more mobile and younger who can grow into this level, rather than someone on the decline.

Coady has done very well, though, so I would expect a lot of positivity from Charlton fans when he does leave, and I think it has been a great short-term partnership for both sides.”

Conor Coady will hope to attract transfer interest with his form at Charlton Athletic

This is one that will divide opinion, as Coady has done well, so, providing it makes sense financially, there are some that will feel he is worth keeping around.

As outlined above, though, it could be a very difficult deal for Charlton to do in terms of his wages, but that’s a discussion for the summer.

Either way, it seems apparent that Coady has no future at Wrexham, and, at this stage of his career, he will want to be playing regularly, which isn’t going to happen with the Welsh club.

Therefore, Coady will see the final part of the campaign as a chance to show what he can do, and he seems to be enjoying his time with Charlton, even in a midfield role, something which he hasn’t done for a very long time in his career.

So, the only focus for Coady will be to get back in the XI, and Charlton will be pleased with what he has added to the squad both on and off the pitch. Then, when the season is done, conversations can take place about whether a permanent stay is feasible.
