Arturo Vidal is known for his clear words – and has now hit the headlines once again. The former Bayern midfielder has made serious accusations against Real Madrid, claiming that the Whites have been given preferential treatment by referees in the past

In the video podcast Enfocados Te Apuesto, which is hosted by former Schalke player Jefferson Farfán, among others, the Chilean spoke openly about his experiences in duels with the Madrilenians

„Every time I’ve played against Real Madrid, I’ve been cheated,“ ranted Vidal. The 38-year-old even went one step further and made a connection with the introduction of the video assistant

„The VAR was introduced because of Real Madrid. There had simply been too much cheating before,“ explained the midfielder

Vidal faced Real Madrid a total of 16 times during his career, and the 2017 Champions League quarter-final between FC Bayern and the Whites remains particularly painful for him

Back then, the Munich side lost a dramatic second leg 4:2 after extra time and the match was the subject of much debate afterwards, as several refereeing decisions were heavily criticized

Vidal himself saw a controversial yellow and red card in this match. In addition, two of Madrid’s goals were scored from offside positions. Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti also expressed his frustration with the decisions after the match

„It’s unacceptable that such mistakes happen in a quarter-final,“ said the Italian at the time and called for support from the video evidence

Vidal looks back on a great career

The Chilean is now winding down his impressive career in his home country. Vidal has been back at his boyhood club Colo-Colo since 2024 and, despite his 38 years, is still one of the key players there

His international career began at Bayer Leverkusen in 2007, followed by spells at Juventus Turin, FC Bayern, FC Barcelona and Inter Milan before he left Europe in 2022 to join Flamengo

However, Vidal was mostly unsuccessful against Real Madrid during his career, winning just four of 16 matches and losing eight – memories that apparently still haunt the combative midfielder to this day.
