A piece for the Athletic about Chelsea’s interest in Anthony Gordon has some really interesting words on the Blues’ aims in the transfer market this summer.

After another disaster year in terms of transfers and results, it looks like those in charge are finally willing to try a change in direction. Simon Johnson’s words outline a change in tack from the sporting structure away from just trying to buy the flashiest young talents.

Chelsea’s new plan should have been in place four years ago

“A list of targets has been drawn up, and they have identified Premier League-ready players as a priority for their recruitment this summer,” Johnson writes.

“According to sources, they want players with top-league experience who are used to the tough schedule of playing in four competitions in a season. They are also looking for players who are emotionally mature and have strong character.”

It all sounds very promising – although surely these are the exact things they’ve been targeting all along. Don’t tell us they spent £2bn on signing players without thinking about making sure they bought guys with the right character?

The evidence, unfortunately, is that they did just that…

In other news…

Anthony Gordon is one of those players, and we can see why he’s appealing for those in charge of transfers.

Marco Silva is not a name at the top of many Chelsea fans’ shortlist, but he’s certainly someone the Blues are going to speak to.
