Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor says that she expects more of the same from latest opponents London City Lionesses despite their heavy defeats against other top four sides this season.

The Blues face The Pride for the very first time in the Barclays Women’s Super League at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.

London City Lionesses have already suffered heavy defeats to Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City this season but Bompastor expects The Pride to continue to play football rather than opt for a defence-heavy strategy.

“I know their coach and he likes them to play football, so I think he will keep the same philosophy that he had against City, United and Arsenal,” Bompastor said when speaking in the pre-match press conference.

“If you reflect on their results, they’ve had a good start to the season. The first games were tough facing strong opponents but they got really good results against direct opponents.

“I think they will come with the same philosophy for this game. They have good quality in the team, good individuals, so they know that they can score against any opponent. They will keep this and come into the game with confidence.”

Going on to discuss Chelsea’s newest London derby opponents further, Bompastor highlighted London City Lionesses’ eagerness to be competitive in the top flight.

She said “It’s nice to play against London City, a new team in the league. They showed their ambitions by changing most of the squad coming into this new league. I know their coach really well and I am expecting a tough game. I know that they’ll be motivated coming and playing at Stamford Bridge, so it’ll be a really interesting game.”

The long-term goal for London City Lionesses is to win trophies and to compete in Europe and Bompastor is pleased to see the creation of a new potential title rival.

She said “I think it’s really nice for the women’s game if we can have as many teams as possible competing against each other. Also, having owners that want to invest in the women’s game is something really positive. We can only applaud that.”
