Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca believes Bayern Munich should have been reduced to ten men after Jonathan Tah avoided a red card in their Champions League encounter on Wednesday night.

The Blues were thoroughly outclassed on their return to Europe’s biggest stage, losing 3-1 to Vincent Kompany’s side at the scene of their 2012 triumph.

Trevoh Chalobah put the ball in his own net in the first half before Harry Kane converted from the spot shortly after.

Chelsea hit back instantly when Cole Palmer ran more than half the length of the pitch before firing the ball past Manuel Neuer.

Bayern kept the west London outfit at arm’s length and finished the game off when Kane took advantage of sloppy passing at the back to score his second of the night. Palmer did find the net again late on with a lovely finish, but it was ruled offside.

There was controversy in the buildup to Chelsea’s goal, however, as Jonathan Tah cynically brought Joao Pedro down near the halfway line as Palmer barrelled towards goal.

The defender was booked for the challenge, and subbed off at halftime by Kompany, but Maresca insisted that Spanish referee José Sánchez Martínez should have shown a red card.

“It should have been a red card,” the Italian said. “I always said it was a red card when there is no intention to go for the ball just when the intention is to kick another player. Why is it not a red card?

“The referee said it was not hard or aggressive enough. So to give you a red card, they need to see your blood or they need to see something. If the intention is to go there, it’s a red card. So for me there is not any doubt.”
