Chelsea are now eyeing a move for free agent John Stones as they look to shore up their rearguard ahead of next season, according to the Daily Mail.

The Blues had tried to kill rumours they were interested in his services around a month ago. However, it appears the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge are now considering him.

Chelsea are scouring the market for defensive reinforcement after struggling last season. They were world-class offensively but could not shut opponents out.

Bringing in new defenders is a priority for new manager Xabi Alonso and rightly so.

Stones is an experienced customer who has delivered at the very highest level. The 32-year-old may be entering the twilight of his career but can still do a fantastic job for Chelsea.

The England international (94 caps) on a free transfer would allow the West London outfit to get rid of duds like Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana, Axel Disasi, and Tosin Adarabioyo.

Chelsea would also be able to send Mamadou Sarr, Josh Acheampong, and Aaron Anselmino on loan to good teams to develop.

Stones has the versatility to operate in a back three or four and can even step into midfield when required. He brings a winning mentality that the team desperately needs.

He has won six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, three EFL Cups, and the UEFA Champions League as part of a historic continental treble-winning Manchester City side in 2022/23.

He is a stylish, ball-playing defender who would be an excellent pick-up, especially if he can manage to stay fit.

Elsewhere, Chelsea are also pushing forward with plans to sign Maxence Lacroix. Both men would complete a small makeover of a backline that needed upgrading.

If they can get a serious left-back and goalkeeper to provide competition for Mike Penders, they could challenge for the Premier League title.
