Chelsea’s target positions for this summer’s transfer window were made very clear by a number of briefings that came out through the course of the second half of the season.
Of course, number one was striker, and the Blues have already landed Liam Delap, with other targets still potentially arriving.
The other positions mentioned most often were left wing, which will clearly see at least one addition now that Jadon Sancho has left, and centre back, where we’re being linked with a number of candidates now that top target Dean Huijsen made a move elsewhere.
Goalkeeper is also an area we’re considering making an addition (despite repeated insistences that the club are happy with their options), with Mike Maignan in talks with us this week.

All of that leaves out one area where we really do lack depth however – left back. First choice Marc Cucurella was one of the few players who did double duty in the Conference League and Premier League last season, once Renato Veiga had left on loan to Juventus in January.
On the London is Blue podcast, they discussed this need:
“We need a backup for Marc Cucurella, because he cannot play all the time… it does feel like that’s a position where Chelsea should make a move as quickly as possible to shore up a very, very major hole if [Cucurella] were to get injured.”
As they note, we’ve been linked to Jorrel Hato of Ajax, and have the highly rated academy product Ishe Samuels Smith who we would love to see play a little at the upcoming Club World Cup.
