Enzo Maresca admitted he “absolutely” needed to share angry words with his players in his half-time team talk as Chelsea trailed third-tier Lincoln in the Carabao Cup third round, before eventually prevailing 2-1.

The Blues were unconvincing again but reached the fourth round thanks to two goals in two minutes in the second half from Tyrique George and Facundo Buonanotte.

Maresca whether he spoke angrily with his team at half-time. His team-talk was likely short and sweet because the Chelsea players returned for the second half much earlier than their hosts.

“Absolutely, absolutely,” Maresca laughed, refusing to answer when pressed on just how angry he got.

“We prepared the game thinking exactly in the way it was the first half, and sometimes it's not about desire, it's about winning second ball, but it's also about experience.

Jamie Gittens never played against League One [teams], these kind of games. Jorrel [Hato] never played this kind of game. This kind of game, you have to play in a different way, you have to play in a different way. It's more about desire, and we struggled in the first half.

“If the next game in [the] Carabao [Cup] is again against a team [from] League One, League Two team away, for sure tonight the experience will be good for the next one. So, we need this experience. We need it.

“Also, because you know already about the age, the experience, players that never played this kind of games. So, tonight has been good also because we won the game.”
