At a time when Barcelona are growing increasingly worried about their seasonal prospects, one of their captains – Marc-Andre ter Stegen – is battling for his own future.

The German international is currently out of Barcelona’s plans and is spending time on the sidelines after undergoing surgery in the summer.

With Ter Stegen no longer part of Barcelona’s plans, the German could fancy an exit in the upcoming January transfer window, in an attempt to seal regular game-time during the second half of the season.

It has been reported in the past that Premier League clubs are keeping close tabs on Ter Stegen.

Chelsea interested in Ter Stegen

According to Sky Sports (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Chelsea have emerged as one of the most interested parties in the pursuit of Ter Stegen.

The Premier League giants are looking to add one more experienced goalkeeper to the squad to put pressure on Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen.

Ter Stegen has emerged as an ideal candidate due to his vast experience at the highest level of football.

Indeed, the former Gladbach keeper has featured in over 400 competitive matches for Barcelona, having won multiple league titles as well as the Champions League.

Ter Stegen, though, is not the only player on Chelsea’s radar, with the Blues also interested in the services of Maik Maignan.

Maignan was close to joining Chelsea last summer, but the move did not materialise. That could change in the upcoming January transfer window.

As for Ter Stegen, despite being reluctant to leave, he is now warming up to the idea of an exit, given that his prospects of being Germany’s No. 1 at the FIFA World Cup 2026 are on the line.

With Chelsea showing interest, only time will tell if it leads to a January move.
