The possibility of Trent Alexander-Arnold not signing a new contract with Liverpool and leaving the club at the end of the season is enough to give any Red sleepless nights.
As a result, rumours are abundant of the club doing their due diligence to find appropriate replacements if the worst-case scenario should occur.
One of the more controversial options that has been suggested would be a move for Chelsea’s 18-year old right-back Josh Acheampong.
Last month we reported that the club scouted the youngster at England’s under-20 matches, along with Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, whilst Real Madrid have also registered their interest.
Liverpool’s scouts had to watch Acheampong play for England partly because they have currently had access rights to Chelsea youth games rescinded due to Chelsea’s dissatisfaction with Rio Ngumoha heading north this past summer to sign for the Reds.
Acheampong has also been frozen out of Chelsea action as the club try to negotiate a new contract with him.
But now Football Insider are reporting that developments have made Acheampong’s services much more necessary and, as a result, fans are now begging them to make sure Liverpool don’t snag another talented youngster.
Reece James suffering yet another injury leaves Chelsea a bit short-staffed at right-back. They are having to field Wesley Fofana, one of the best centre-backs in the league this season, in the position for today’s game against Leicester.
“At least 3 games Josh Acheampong could play by the end of next month guaranteed if things got sorted out behind the scenes.” @CFCDaily posted on X, whilst @MlRPaul2001 added “Is Josh Acheampong the ONLY person in the Chelsea universe that doesn’t see a path for himself in this first team? Cuz we all can clearly see one for him.”
But Chelsea’s pain could truly be Liverpool’s gain if the club were proactive. The situations all line up - Liverpool may need a long-term replacement, Acheampong is seemingly dissatisfied at Chelsea, and Chelsea are very annoyed about Liverpool taking their players.
Everything points to a deal Liverpool could, and should, get done.
