Chelsea fans wait to hear fate of sporting directors as more evidence of their incompetence laid bare

Enzo Maresca was far from universally popular as Chelsea boss, but he was also a long way from the most dislike figure at the club.

The sporting directors are searching for a new manager once again. The fifth permanent coach of the BlueCo era. That is a tangible, undeniable sign of the incompetence of those doing the searching.

Time and again we hear from those with good connections at Chelsea that the cabal of sporting directors led by Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley are not under pressure and are trusted by the ownership. But while their dreadful work in the transfer market can be argued over and spun in a more positive direction, their failure to find a manager who can keep the job for more than a year is surely too stark an example of their lack of ability to be ignored by those above them.

They had to get this appointment right, after getting Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino wrong. Maresca survived a little longer, but ultimately proved to be a bad choice in terms of style and personality. The one thing they needed was someone who wouldn’t kick up a fuss, and they didn’t manage it.

The sacking of Maresca won’t be celebrated much – new of pressure on those who appointed him would be much better received.

In other news…

There were countless issues behind the removal of Maresca, but ultimately it was the bad results which turned the situation critical. Wins can paper over a lot of cracks, dropped points make small issues a lot bigger.

Talk has already turned to who might replace Maresca, with one outstanding and obvious semi internal candidate named. Fabrizio Romano is among those who have weighed in.
