Chelsea have made it clear that Jamie Gittens is their priority target this summer.
According to Standard Sport, the Blues are not backing down from the race despite fresh competition from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.
Chelsea started their attacking revamp with the £30 million addition of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town.
There are rumours that they could still sign another striker, but they’re firmly in the market for a new left winger after returning Jadon Sancho to Manchester United.
Chelsea have been linked with Olympique Lyon’s Malick Fofana, but Gittens is at the top of their summer shopping list. They’ve already had several meetings with Dortmund over a potential transfer.
The Blues have already agreed personal terms with the 20-year-old winger. He has given his word over a seven-year contract. All that remains is for both clubs to agree on a transfer fee.
But that is proving to be far from straightforward, as Chelsea and Dortmund value the player differently.
Chelsea have already seen a couple of bids turned down by Dortmund. Their most recent proposal was worth a reported £42m, but it was turned down by Dortmund, who are holding out for £50m.
The Bundesliga side initially slapped an £86m price tag on Gittens. But that was when his stock was very high. His numbers dipped in the second half of last season, and so did his valuation.
Chelsea are reluctant to match Dortmund’s asking price, but Der BVB are in no rush to sanction a sale and are just as willing as the Blues to play the waiting game.
Gittens still has three years left on his contract with Dortmund, but Chelsea are confident that they can find common ground with their German counterparts.
According to FBREF, Gittens has a similar profile to Athletic Club’s Nico Williams, who has previously been linked with a move to Chelsea.
Other English clubs have been linked with Gittens but have moved on to other targets, leaving Chelsea with a free run. That was until Bayern reignited their interest.
The German champions could throw a wrench in Chelsea’s plans, but the Blues are undeterred. They’re making an effort to snap him up before the start of the new season.
