Blues slump to a fourth straight Premier League defeat on a night where too many players underperformed
Chelsea’s hunt for Champions League football suffered a hugely damaging blow at Stamford Bridge as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United.
Matheus Cunha’s first-half strike proved the only goal of an evenly-contested game and left Chelsea four points off fifth-place Liverpool, having played a game more.
The pressure on Liam Rosenior will only intensify as a result.
Dom Smith was at Stamford Bridge to rate the Chelsea players...
Robert Sanchez 5
Beaten all ends up by Cunha for United’s goal. Had little to do, really.
Malo Gusto 6
One cross into the box was almost converted by Cole Palmer. Defended resolutely.
Wesley Fofana 5
Took a knock from Sanchez early on but continued. A couple of important clearances and hit the crossbar but was sluggish at moments.
Jorrel Hato 6
Booked for a cynical foul on Bryan Mbeumo but made a fantastic late tackle on the Cameroonian and drove the ball out from the back line.
Marc Cucurella 4
Moises Caicedo 5
Committed to Chelsea for the long-term by signing a new contract this week but was below par against the Red Devils.
Enzo Fernandez 6
Outmuscled Noussair Mazraoui and Casemiro with one brilliant turn but then curled wide when he ought to have hit the target. As influential as any of Chelsea’s players except Neto on his return.
Pulled up with a hamstring injury midway through running clear with a 15th-minute chance. It forced him off. Worrying signs and Chelsea will need to assess him.

Cole Palmer 4
A rather dour performance from England’s World Cup hopeful, whose impact was pretty much non-existent except for one shot which fell just wide.
Pedro Neto 6
Chelsea’s best player on another dismal day. Tried to make things happen and at least one of his crosses deserved to be met with a clinical finish.
Liam Delap 5
Started ahead of Joao Pedro due to the Brazilian’s thigh injury. Hit the crossbar with a header but was otherwise quiet.
Subs:
Alejandro Garnacho (Estevao, 15’) 4
Didn’t have much luck against his former team but played more than he expected due to Estevao’s early injury.
Josh Acheampong (Gusto, 81’) N/A
Trevoh Chalobah (Fofana, 81’) N/A
