Chelsea are keeping a close eye on Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel as they evaluate their goalkeeping options.
The Swiss international has also been on Manchester United’s radar for some time, meaning the Blues could face competition when the transfer window reopens at the end of the season.
Chelsea’s interest in Kobel has grown following a series of high-profile errors from current first-choice goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
While manager Enzo Maresca has publicly backed the Spaniard, Chelsea are considering their long-term goalkeeping situation and believe Kobel fits their ideal profile.
However, Dortmund are in no rush to entertain offers.
The Bundesliga side remains focused on their Champions League campaign, with Wednesday’s 3-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk securing 10th place in the League Phase standings.
They will now face Sporting CP or Club Brugge for a spot in the last 16, where Lille or Aston Villa await.
A summer approach for Kobel could prompt renewed interest from United. The Red Devils have been tracking the 27-year-old for some time, as they continue to assess Andre Onana’s performances.
Despite showing signs of improvement over the past year, Onana’s inconsistency has raised concerns, similar to those surrounding Sánchez at Chelsea.
That said, United’s transfer priorities may lie elsewhere. Manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly planning a squad overhaul, which could push a move for Kobel down the club’s to-do list.
If United decide against pursuing the Dortmund goalkeeper, Chelsea may have a clearer path to securing his signature – though negotiating with the Bundesliga side is rarely straightforward, especially when they’re not keen to sell.
The Blues will also welcome Belgian prospect Mike Penders from Genk this summer, with a deal for the towering young goalkeeper already in place.
They could also consider recalling Djordje Petrovic from sister club RC Strasbourg, with the Serbian excelling in France.
