Chelsea are ready to revisit a deal to sign Mike Maignan from AC Milan in January.
Chelsea made an approach to sign the France international in the summer but baulked at Milan’s asking price for Maignan.
The West Londoners decided against pursuing a goalkeeper following the breakdown of talks, with Enzo Maresca insisting he was content with the club’s current options.
However, Chelsea have put a new number one back on their transfer agenda, following Robert Sanchez’s red card at Manchester United this weekend.
Sanchez was sent off just five minutes into the 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford after a reckless challenge on Bryan Mbeumo. It follows an unconvincing 2024/25 campaign, in which Sanchez made five errors leading to goals – the joint-most of any Premier League goalkeeper.
According to the Daily Express, Chelsea consider Maignan as an upgrade and the player’s contract situation adds to his appeal.
Maignan’s deal at the San Siro expires at the end of the campaign and Chelsea can approach the Frenchman on a pre-contract agreement in January.
Alternatively, a knockdown fee could be agreed with Milan facing the prospect of losing Maignan as a free agent in 2026.
