Chelsea have a big night tonight.

After years out in the cold, they return to the Champions League, and it’s a serious game to begin with. Enzo Maresca’s team head to the Allianz Arena for a clash with Bayern Munich, returning to Europe’s top competition in the stadium where they first won the competition back in 2012.

Dramatic twists in Portugal set up narrative rich reunion for Chelsea

That’s pretty dramatic – but there could be more drama to come even before the end of this month in the CL. According to many sources in Portugal, a fun reunion could be on the cards.

Jose Mourinho was sacked by Fenerbahce last month after failing to qualify them for the Champions League, losing to Benfica in the final play off qualifier. Now things have turned in spectacular fashion. Benfica played their first game of the league stage last night, losing 3-2 to Qarabag.

The crowd booed manager Bruno Lage and the players off the pitch, and sure enough, a few hours later the news came through that former Wolves boss Lage had been sacked.

Now who is favourite to take over? None other than… Jose Mourinho.

Jose closes in on Benfica return

Ben Jacobs on Jose Mourinho’s return to Benfica.

Top sources like Ben Jacobs are making it sound like the deal is almost done. 20 years after starting his managerial career with a brief stint at the Estadio da Luz, a return looks close.

Having seen his team knocked out of the Champions League by Benfica, Mourinho will now go and manage the Eagles. The guy somehow just attracts these sorts of storylines and drama.

They’re off to a bad start after the defeat last night, but they will have a chance to bounce back in their second game which is, of course, at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea.

We can’t wait.
