Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has hailed Moises Caicedo as “one of the best defensive midfielders” in the world alongside Manchester City’s Rodri.
The 23-year-old put in a masterful display during the Blues’ 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening, making 14 defensive contributions and providing an assist.
Caicedo stole the ball from Micky van de Ven and battled brilliantly to lay it off to Joao Pedro for the game’s only goal.
“He’s top,” Maresca told Sky Sports. “He’s up there with Rodri as one of the best defensive midfielders, probably in the world.
“In England, 1-0 is not a finished game. We could have scored one or two more and it would have been a lot more relaxed for us. But a win against Tottenham, clean sheet, and we’re happy.”
Chelsea could have won by a far bigger scoreline given their dominance of the match, but the narrow victory was enough to bring them up to fifth in the Premier League table, level on points with Spurs.
“It was a good performance for sure,” the Italian added. “Spurs look very very good. You need this kind of performance to win.
“I think you have to be brave on the ball and off the ball. Off the ball we were good but on the ball we create many chances. We are very happy, for us, for the fans – it’s a big derby, and we move on.
Maresca played down talk of the club being in crisis following last week’s shock defeat to Sunderland at Stamford Bridge.
“It’s the first thing I said to the players. We went from eleventh to fourth. It’s a matter of balance. We lost one out of the last seven against Sunderland, and everything was wrong. I think we are on the right path.”
