It was always going to happen, from the moment the long awaited deal to sign Kylian Mbappe finally went through. Rodrygo Goes is gradually becoming a spare part at Real Madrid, through no real fault of his own.
He has suffered from simply not being as famous or well paid as Mbappe, Vinicius or Jude Bellingham. He’s too good to sit on the bench, but there’s also no way that even Real Madrid can fit all their attacking options in the team at once.
Alejandro Alcazar’s article for Sport in Spain today calls Rodrygo an increasingly “inconsequential” figure in Madrid, gradually squeezed out by the quality around him. It’s said that his future could be up up in the air if an irresistible offer comes in, and there are no shortage of suitors – including Chelsea.
He’s playing less, scoring less, and looking less like the world class attacker he did a year ago.

We can’t rule out a bid for him, and in many ways he’s the sort of high quality attacker this Chelsea team could do with. But our current model is about trying to find the next Rodrygo, not the last one. His wage demands and Madrid’s transfer demands are likely to make this a very expensive deal when all is said and done, and not one that really fits the direction we’re going in at the moment.
It’s still not impossible that there’s a change to the model which allows them to bring in a superstar, but this summer we’d imagine the focus will be on a striker and a central defender. The hope will be that Estevao Willian can come in and start producing right away, making a bid for Rodrygo redundant.
