Chelsea have been today linked with Mateus Fernandes of West Ham, a player we really like.

So what do the stats say about the freshly minted Portugal international? Despite playing for a team who are close to relegation, he’s really impressed this season, especially since he took up a more creative role after Lucas Paqueta left in January.

He’s got 6 G/A in 31 starts in the Premier League, and FotMob have him down with a really impressive average rating of 7.22.

Fernandes’ clear strengths and one weakness

As you can see, he’s a really well rounded player. He’s in the top third of the league in chances created AND defensive contributions.

Just imagine how those numbers would look if he was playing for a top team who dominate the ball? His aerial duels numbers aren’t great, but he’s the same height as Enzo Fernandez so could certainly improve them with some good coaching.
